The Winter Skin Survival Guide: Canadian Skincare We Love

The fall and winter in Canada are no joke; the colder months are here and we don’t want your skin to suffer!  Dry heating, wet snow, and rough winds (and don't forget excessive flu season hand washing) lead to skin irritations, excess dryness, and cracked hands and feet. This guide will help you discover your new go-to products to help soothe, treat, and heal your face and body. Not only helpful products sold in-store and online at Flock, but tips and tricks that you can use to check your own medicine cabinet at home. Come and see some of the best exfoliating, moisturizing, and healing skincare products made by favourite Canadian brands!

1. Exfoliate

Exfoliation is the perfect first step to make sure that the rough and dead skin cells are out of the way. Whether you’re working with a scrub, a mitt, or a chemical exfoliant, you should exfoliate about once a week to allow for your skin to breathe and properly absorb all of the wonderful creams and serums you’re applying.

For the body: Wildplier Luxe Deep Exfoliating Glove is a gentle exfoliator for both adults and children to lift away dead skin cells without extra cleansers or scrubs.

Allow your skin to soak up warm water in the bath or a long hot shower and rub across the skin to remove dead skin build up (we know it’s kinda gross, but trust us!)

For the face: The Radiance Botanical Face Scrub is a finely milled physical exfoliant that is gentle enough for the face to buff away dead skin cells and skincare build up. Filled with anti-oxidants and orange peel to nourish and brighten the skin.

Add a teaspoon of scrub powder to the palm of your hand and with just a few drops of water, mix with your finger tips and work into the skin gently, rinse off, and continue with your skincare routine

Hydration is the biggest buzz word when it comes to winter skin care, but what about the ingredients that nourish?

Making sure that your skincare carries great ingredients for the health of your skin is a necessary step.

Look for plant extracts and oils, berries and flowers for anti-oxidants, and natural forms of active ingredients like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Retinol for non-irritating and effective results. Here are some of our faves:

  2. Nourish

For the hands: A Renewing Hand Serum for Aging Skin might seem like an excessive step to your skincare routine, but we’d like for you to treat yourself this wintertime.

Adding a serum under your favourite hand cream will create a super product to help treat signs of aging and care for the skin further below the surface layers.

Paume’s hand serum is filled with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, gallic acid, and niacinamide to help with dark spots, elasticity, and texture.

For the face: The Calming Chamomile Face Cream is the holy grail for nourishing and providing relief for those who need it.

Especially in the blistering cold and wind, redness and irritation can be soothed by this face cream.

Filled with chamomile flower extract, aloe, colloidal oatmeal, and borage oil for anti-inflammatory and soothing effects.

3. Soften

Softening the skin can feel like a major task when your skin is rough and cracked. Softening can come with the help of a lot of wonderful products and ingredients. Adding water to the softening routine allows for the skin to relax and soak in the products that you are giving it. Introducing baths and washes that are filled with oils, salts, and butters help immensely!

For the body: The Picot Bath Soak comes in the brand’s best selling scent and delivers silky skin every time you get out of the bath.

Perfect for those bone chilling days or self-care nights, just a ¼ cup of this bath soak is filled with sea, epsom, and dendritic salts with Rhassoul clay.

Coconut oil helps disperse the nutrients across the water.

TIP: use the Wildplier Luxe Deep Exfoliating Glove after you’ve soaked to remove excess dry skin

Bottle of 'Hello Sunshine' cleansing oil by Stay Wild Apothecary with calendula flowers on a stone surface

For the face: Hello Sunshine Cleansing Oil makes sure that your skin is cleansed and nourished without stripping the skin after a long day.

Calendula extract, grapeseed and avocado oil help glide makeup and dirt off of the skin while softening the skin, all without creating suds.

Dampen your face with water, pump desired amount of cleansing oil into palms and massage into skin; Product will get milky with water.

Hydrating is the ultimate step to ensure that your skin is plump, smooth, and feeling good without tightness. Hydration can come from adding or sealing in moisture with butters and oils that penetrate the skin just enough to seal in the hydration for that supple bouncy skin.

4. Hydrate

For the body: Ember Wellness created the Hydrating Body Oil that also compliments their lymphatic drainage tool.

This product blends liquid shea, argan, and jojoba for fast-absorbing and non-clogging hydration and shine.

Best used out of the shower to allow the oils to break down and emulsify into the skin!

For the face (and beard!): Bridlewood Soaps’ Hemp Beard Oil will bring softness and moisture to the beard and skin!

Hemp, camellia, and pomegranate seed oil are high in fatty acids and antioxidants to enhance nourishment and lock in moisture.

Apply a few drops to your hands and massage into your beard and face.

5. Protect

Protecting the skin comes with a more specific territory to help shield and heal the skin due to irritation, breaking, and stress.

Balms, salves, and ointments add a special touch to the spots that need it most!

We’re loving all-purpose and healing products that you’ll want to reach for all of your needs.

For the lips: Seal in nourishment with a Shea Butter Lip Balm.

Filled with butters and oils to keep lips soft, hydrated, and cared for, beeswax is the first ingredient to ensure a protective layer on the skin.

Available in 3 different scents, you can choose your favourite and carry around your recyclable aluminium tin everywhere you go!

For everywhere: Calendula Salve works effectively against inflammation and infections. Whether you’re working on healing a cut, scrape, rash, burn, or irritation, this ointment will help remove bacteria and soothe with locally grown calendula flowers.

Clean the area, apply as needed, and leave in your medicine cabinet for years to come (as this product doesn’t expire!)
